That Wanaka Tree is iconic with photographers from around the world. The majority of my photo shoots when we lived in Wanaka, were of that Wanaka tree.
On the morning of this photo shoot, I left Queenstown early to arrive in Wanaka before sunrise. Even though I shot this image during COVID 19 it is still popular. I drove over the Crown Range in good time. Although it was early winter, there was no ice on the road.
It did not take long for people to arrive at the tree. I was the first to arrive. I left my car early and headed towards Lake Wanaka whilst it was still dark.
As I secured my tripod in the water, first light made an appearance behind the town of Wanaka. As you can see, it was honestly a sight to behold. I could not take my eyes off of the beautiful colours. Deep golds, blues, reds and orange.
I did not capture the tree initially as I have done so on numerous occasions. Instead, I focused on the sunrise over the town of Wanaka. I walked into the lake, wearing waders. It is always an advantage wearing waders as I can capture the mood of the moment more accurately.
Of course, I adjusted my focal length on my lens. I had my photographic filter bag up on my chest. Attached to a belt, just to be safe. I also enjoy taking vertical shots as they can sometimes change the dynamics entirely.
I drove to Queenstown after I packed away my photographic equipment with joy and peace in my heart.
